Lucian glanced down. Fuck yeah, he murmured.

Okay, Dimitri said. Chase, you find something to use or shift and use your teeth. I’ll take these two fuckers. Lexi… he broke off, and I felt a wave of terror pass through whatever connection this was.

  My heart clenched.

Lexi, you get to Sean, however you can, and we’ll be there as soon as we can. Be careful. I love you.

We all love you, Lucian echoed.

You’re ours, Chase said. And we’re yours.

But don’t think for a second you won’t pay for offering yourself up like the proverbial lamb when we get out of here, Dimitri added, sending along a very clear image of his hand connecting with my ass.

I grinned and sprang forward, towards Sean and Alyssa.

Once more, the room erupted into chaos, but this time, I could keep track of my mates. Chase shouted for Lucian to turn and saved him from another slice of knife, while Dimitri tore a chunk of flesh from one of the attackers’ legs.

I circled Sean, trying to ignore the familiarity of the men fighting my mates. I didn’t know their names, wasn’t sure they’d ever interacted with me in the mountain, but I saw the family resemblance and knew they were my half-siblings.

  Fucking traitors.

Wolves were fiercely protective of their families. These men should have been protecting Alyssa and me, but, instead, they saw us as nothing. They were loyal only to a dead madman and each other.

The one for the many, Sean had said. I wondered just how many of them had slipped through Katherine’s hands and were now working together.

Lexi! Behind you! Dimitri’s shout reached me a moment too late. I braced a split-second before a large gray wolf slammed into me, driving me to the floor. He pressed his weight down and leaned in to snarl an inch from my face. His hot breath was rancid and made my stomach churn.

His thick paws moved to my shoulders, pinning me to the floor. Keeping his eyes trained on me, he elongated his nails, piercing my skin painfully.

I bit back the pain but my mates heard it, anyway.

Fuck! Dimitri roared through our bond. I can’t get to her.

  Hold on! Lucian shouted.

I shifted my gaze towards him, careful to keep my body from moving, and saw Lucian smash his elbow into his opponent’s face, sending him crashing to the floor.

“Get the fuck off her!” Lucian’s voice echoed off the walls.

Sharp teeth closed over my throat, squeezing tight until they moved past fur to break skin. The scent of my own blood filled my nose.

Lucian halted and held up his hands. “Don’t,” he cautioned the wolf. “I’m not moving.” He took a step back to prove his point. I tried not to breathe, just in case it made the wolf’s bite deepen.

Dimitri’s howl filled the room, followed by new blood. He padded around me and my captor carefully, moving to Lucian’s side. At the back of the room, Chase pushed to his feet, covered in fresh blood that I prayed wasn’t his own.

They crooned to me, words of warning, to stay still, to not be afraid, to know how much they loved me. Tears filled my eyes and spilled onto my fur, as their fears trembled through our bond.

We need a distraction, Lucian whispered, his mental tone broken and terrified.

If we move, he’ll tear her throat out, Chase warned.

“Where are your silly threats now, Lexi?” Sean called out, drawing all eyes but my villains towards him.

I glanced over, realizing I’d nearly forgotten about him in the mayhem. He was leaning over the chair from the back, grinning as if already counting his victory despite the dead or dying bodies lying around the room. In his hand, he still held the knife, pressed to Alyssa’s blood-soaked throat.

“I guess we’ve come to an impasse,” he said with a shrug. “Whatever will your little boyfriends do? But then, they’re not just your boyfriends, are they, Lexi?”

  My mouth went dry.

Sean rolled his eyes and leaned farther forward. “It wasn’t hard to figure out. It is fascinating, though. Maybe, once we capture you, we can figure out what makes your brain tick.” He cocked an eyebrow, making his meaning perfectly clear.

Alyssa’s eyes, so glassy with shock, widened as she contemplated his meaning and realized what he was saying. Her gaze shot between me and my mates, then back to me.

Slowly, she lowered her eyelids, held them shut for a moment, then opened her mouth as wide as possible around the bandana, wrenched her head to the side, and sank her teeth into Sean’s exposed ear.

The wolf holding me jerked his head up at the cry of pain and spray of fresh blood. That split second distraction was all my mates needed to move.

One second I was straining for breath beneath the bulk of a wolf, the next he was flying off me and I was being gathered into strong arms and held. My entire body shook violently, cold and hot all at the same time, as shock stole through me.

This wasn’t the first savage fight I’d seen or been a part of, I reminded myself. I was stronger than this. Alyssa needed my help. I lifted my face from Chase’s chest and turned towards my sister.

And let out a low keening howl.

Blood spilled down her chest, spreading like an obscene paint splatter over the white dress, past the knife sticking out of her flesh.

On the ground beside her, crouched Sean, caged by a snarling Dimitri, clutching the side of his head. Lucian’s hands hovered above the knife as he begged the Old Ones to save her life.

My wolf recoiled, letting my human form take over as grief and rage settled over me like a brilliant white light. The sound of Sean’s whimpering and Alyssa’s ragged breaths as her body struggled to survive, were filtered out, still there but somewhere in the distance.

I crawled on my hands and knees, the cold not touching my naked body, and reached Alyssa as she tentatively touched the blade protruding from her chest.

“Don’t,” I whispered, kneeling before her. I laid my hand over her bloody wrist and held her. Her eyes swam with tears and fear. Alyssa opened her mouth, squeezing out a word that barely made a sound.

  “Lexi.”

I let my tears wash over my cheeks, too busy memorizing her face to wipe them away. She was beautiful, and brave, and fiercely loyal. She was my family, my sister, and now she was dying.

  She reached for me again.

Chase appeared with a knife in his hand and another for Lucian. “Cut her free,” he murmured, and began to saw, careful not to jar her.

When the rope fell slack, they lifted her, so gently, it broke my heart anew, and laid her in my arms.

I stroked her face, wiping away tears and humming quietly as she watched me silently. I saw when the pain left them and knew it wouldn’t be long.

“Shhh,” I murmured when she tried to speak again. “It’s alright. You can rest, now. It’s okay. I’ve got you.”

Her eyes went murky and unseeing.

I shifted her higher, knowing she felt no more pain, and pressed my lips to her temple. The lyrics to Blackbird flowed from my mouth, one of her favorite songs, I remembered, until all that was left of Alyssa faded away.

I finished the song, rocking her limp body as sobs stole my breath and my mates huddled near, silently touching some part of me.

It all felt too familiar, sitting on the ground, holding one another with blood, ours and others, dripping from open wounds. We’d been here before, with Randall, and it was inconceivable that we were here again.

Maybe if I just closed my eyes, it would all disappear. I’d wake up and it would be just a dream, a familiar nightmare. Alyssa would be alive, we wouldn’t be surrounded with death, and the past would still be firmly in the past.

But it wasn’t and this wasn’t a nightmare, it was real life, and there was one person still alive to interrogate.

I shifted to the side, lowering Alyssa to the hard floor. Her hair fell across the face, hiding the beauty that death was already trying to steal. I brushed it back, took a deep breath, and rose to my feet to
confront Sean.

Dimitri, naked and human, pulled Sean to his feet.

Blood oozed from between his fingers, which were clapped to the side of his head. I tried to formulate words, to find a way to ask why, to demand answers, but the thoughts in my mind wouldn’t coalesce.

“Who else have you taken?” Lucian asked, picking a question from my mind.

  Sean smirked.

Dimitri slapped him upside the head, making him howl in pain. “Answer her.”

“It doesn’t matter who, you won’t find them. No one will ever find them unless those friends you claim to have give us what we want,” Sean spat, spraying blood out of his mouth.

I swallowed and tried not to visibly shiver.

“What do you want?” Chase picked up the interrogation.

I sent my thanks to all of them through our bond.

“You’ll know soon enough,” was his only answer.

Dimitri grabbed Sean’s shirt and shook him viciously, hopefully knocking a few brain cells loose.

But Sean only laughed. “You might as well kill me. I won’t betray my brothers.”

“What about your sisters?” I screamed wildly, surging forward to slam my fist into his face. The crunch of bone beneath my fist was satisfying and released the pain locked inside me. “What about us?” My legs went weak, and I stumbled.

Lucian caught me and pulled me upright.

Sean sneered. “You’re no sister of mine,” he muttered.

I turned from him then, unable and unwilling to spend a second longer trying to reason with another madman. He’d been raised by Raphael. He might be more lucid than Randall had been, but I saw barely any difference. They wanted payback and were willing to sacrifice blood to get it.

My hand shook as I picked up my fallen clothing and reached into a pocket to pull out my cell phone. Grief blurred my vision so much, it took two tries to find and press the programmed number.

It rang three times and was answered by a cheerful greeting of, “Lexi! How great to hear from you! How are you doing?”

I squeezed my eyes shut, blocking out the sight of my sister’s body on the cold floor.

“Lexi?” Rose asked, her tone shifting to worried. “What’s wrong?”

“Alyssa’s dead,” I whispered, barely able to speak now. “Rose,” I interrupted her gasp. “Rose, I need you. Please, come quick. Randall wasn’t alone. There are others.” I took a deep breath. “And they’ve got my sisters.”
